The future of the East Side Neighborhood Services (ESNS) took another turn with a meeting called by the employees of the nonprofit organization on March 25. The employees of the financially troubled community service organization were most concerned about the ESNS Board’s plan to merge with another organization and possibly sell the organization’s building at 1700 Second Street.
New river rules across metro corridor
As of late 2025, all 25 river cities and townships in the metro area have adopted new regulations for riverfront development. According to Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR), a nonprofit which works “to protect, restore and enhance the Mississippi River and its watershed in the Twin Cities region,” this represents a milestone in “clearer, science-based regulations for riverfront development.”
Skater and archivist honored with documentary
Photographer and filmmaker Keri Pickett recently returned from Greece after a screening of her documentary “Uncle Roy” at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Film Festival. Now, she is getting ready for the film’s American premiere as part of the Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival.
Edison wrestler wins second straight state title
Reymie Keenan, a senior at Edison High School, won their second straight Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) wrestling title in February, in the 235 lb. girls category. Keenan was the only Minneapolis wrestler to win a state title.
Heights launches camera-sharing program
In early March, the Columbia Heights Police Department (CHPD) launched a program for residents to share camera footage with the CHPD. A press release from the city described the Residential & Business Camera Registry as way to create “a database of private camera locations in the City.”
Historic snowfall prompts new round of grooming
CoCoRaHS, the National Weather Service’s Northeast Minneapolis station, measured 8.1 inches of snow as of 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 15, surpassing the previous daily record of five inches. The historic snowfall was welcomed by the volunteer cross-country ski groomers at Columbia Park, who, after a busy and early start to the season, had little snow to work with between late December and much of February.
Silverwood Park Fire
A grass fire was reported around 2:30 p.m. March 21 near the entrance to Silverwood Park. Heidi Sawyer, who was visiting the park, took photos of the scene.
Minnesota anchors returning No Kings protests
On Saturday, March 28, Columbia Heights’ 49th Avenue pedestrian bridge became the site for hundreds of demonstrators to participate in “No Kings 3.” That day, millions more participants joined in the third large-scale No Kings nationwide protest. In total, there were over 3,100 separate events, including several in the Twin Cities.
